Prevent Burn Error with Tomato Sauce

Have you ever experience a burn error while cooking a tomato based recipe in the Instant Pot? It can happen especially with items such as rice or noodles that expand quickly, absorbing loose liquid. The tomato sauce will then scorch the bottom of the pot with the expanded noodles/rice.

To prevent burn error with tomato sauce, simply follow the order in which you add the ingredients:

  1. Cook meat first. Then deglaze pot with a little water on saute mode until cooked on food bits are scraped off.
  2. Add pasta and seasonings. Do not stir. This will prevent the noodles from being on the bottom of pot and expanding too quickly without enough liquid, creating a burn error.
  3. Add tomato sauce and diced tomatoes on top of pasta. Do not stir.
  4. Pour water over the top of pasta. Do not stir.
  5. Pressure cook! When done cooking, then stir the ingredients together and serve.

This is the same method I use for making easy Instant Pot Spaghetti.

8qt recipe size

This Instant Pot Goulash recipe is easy to expand to feed a larger crowd and fit inside the 8QT Instant Pot.

  • Add 1 lb more ground beef (making 2 lb ground beef total)
  • Add an additional 14.5 oz can of petite diced tomatoes
  • Season with salt to taste

That’s it! Follow the same cooking method and you’ll have enough to feed 8-10 people!

Gluten free substitution

Have problems with gluten? Substitute the noodles in Instant Pot Goulash with your favorite gluten free noodles.

  • Look at recommend cook time on gluten free noodles package. Divide that number in half. Use that number as the pressure cooking time.
  • We like these gluten free noodles from Tinkyada when we make this gluten free Instant Pot goulash.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 6 minutes
Total Time: 16 minutes
Servings: 6
Calories: 408kcal

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion diced
  • 16 oz elbow macaroni noodles
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard powder
  • 28 oz can tomato sauce
  • 14.5 oz can petite diced tomatoes
  • 3 cups water

Instructions

  • Push saute button and wait until screen reads HOT on the Instant Pot. Add oil, onion and ground beef. Cook until brown.
  • Deglaze bottom of pot by adding 1/2 cup of the recipe water to boil/scrape off stuck on bits. This will prevent a burn error during pressure cooking.
  • Add noodles and seasoning, do not stir. Allow noodles to rest on top of meat. This will help pasta cook but not burn on bottom as it expands with the tomato sauce.
  • Add tomato sauce and diced tomatoes on top of pasta. Do not stir.
  • Add water over top of the pasta. Do not stir.
  • Close lid and turn knob to sealing position. Pressure cook on high for 4 minutes (*6 minute cook time for gluten free noodles). Quick release pressure when cook time is done by turning the knob to venting position.
  • Stir and enjoy!

Notes

*8QT size modification: Add an additional 1 lb ground beef and 14.5 oz can of petite diced tomatoes. Add salt to taste.
*Gluten free substitute: use 16 oz gluten free pasta (we prefer Tinkyada brand)
